Art Filmmaking

This blog is about the stuff I am working on.

A Journey of Harmony?

Since an early age I became acquainted of the Tibetan culture due to several mountaineering books that my dad had at home. I found Tibetan culture so amazing and so rich in values and traditions. Since then, I always have wanted to visit that beautiful and sublime part of the planet. However, as I grew up I found out that Tibet was -and is- an occupied country. I also found out about all the atrocities that their people, the Tibetans, and their physical land have had to endure by their violent occupants. Such occupants are the same who are inundating the whole world with their cheap, bad quality products. I’m afraid no one in this planet is exempt from owning something produced by such a nation. Even the computer with which I’m connected to the Internet, and I am writing this lines, was assembled in this Asian country. Yes, this is the same country that today is getting ready to host the Olympic games this year (2008.)

The point of this project, is to observe, and hopefully create awareness about the injustices that are going on in Tibet. Ecco! right now, as I write these lines, I can hear at the news about the demonstrations going on in this moment in San Francisco, California. What’s up with those athletes and cops that are still trying to protect the torch from those demonstrators; demonstrators that care for human rights (and probably even for animal rights, which, although that’s beyond the scope of this project, China is a country that performs brutal things to animals, and it just takes a second to search in the web for videos that proof this statement.)

In the past days since the torch was lit in China and started its tour, it has been an actual obstacles race for the athletes carrying the flame. The Brits in London did a good job demonstrating in favor of Tibet, the French people did an awesome job demonstrating and turning the torch off at least four times, and finally making complete its tour in that area by bus (great success!) San Francisco is doing a good job right now, too.

On the other hand, I’ll be observing random articles of general and specific consumption, and their origin. I find it mind blowing that we are being inundated by Chinese products. It is like supporting human rights abuse indirectly.

I really hope that this year, the Olympic games turn into a fiasco for the hosting country. Let’s show our support to Tibetans, and to human rights in general, by avoiding watching this great event, which is the Olympic games, and by trying to avoid the consumption of Chinese-made products. I know that is a very hard thing to do, and it is hard even for me to walk my talk in this regard, but I will try as much as I can.
