“Because it’s there” is the now immortal quote of the British mountaineer Sir George Mallory when he was asked why climbing Mount Everest.
He attempted to climb to the summit of that mountain several times. He, pretty much, dedicated his short life to this mountain, and up there is where he remains.
Several years had to pass before the summit was attempted again, and several more years until it was finally reached.
Before the 1990s only a couple of hundreds had had the opportunity to step on the top of the world, but only a few of those did it by fair means (with no supplemental oxygen.) In the 1990s, a big boom of commercial expeditions and a new era of mountaineering started. This is the era of the digital mountaineering. With digital technology and technological advances in dressing and gear today is not surprising to hear about over a hundred people standing on the summit of Mount Everest in one single day. Perhaps none of them without supplemental oxygen. Certainly none of them with anything new to offer to the advancement of mountaineering.
The sacred has become corrupted. Nothing is new, everything has been done. Only sometimes there’s someone doing something already done but in a different way. Climbing Everest has become a meme.
